Overview

This course on outdoor education for school teachers aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of outdoor education. This course will cover topics such as risk assessment, outdoor activities, and environmental education. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of outdoor education, the benefits of outdoor activities, and best practices for outdoor safety. Through lectures, case studies, and hands-on activities, participants will gain practical skills to develop outdoor education curriculum for their schools. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to explore the natural environment and learn about the cultural and ecological history of the region. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to lead successful outdoor education programs in their own schools.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have acquired capabilities to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the educational benefits of outdoor learning.
  • Develop the skills necessary to plan, organize and lead outdoor learning activities.
  • Understand and adhere to safety considerations when taking students learning outdoors.
  • Create lesson plans and activities that integrate outdoor learning into the curriculum.
  • Incorporate outdoor learning into classroom instruction to increase student engagement and understanding.
  • Utilize the outdoor environment to foster collaboration and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how outdoor learning can support student learning objectives in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM).
  • Utilize technology and other resources to facilitate outdoor learning.
  • Develop strategies for assessing student learning in an outdoor setting.

Programme of the Modules

A detailed programme will be sent via e-mail on request or soon after the enrolment.
Classes can take place in the Morning (9:00 – 13:00) or afternoon (15.00 – 19.00).

Here is an example of a daily program for an Outdoor Education and Learning course:

9.00 AM – 9.30 AM: Introduction and Icebreaker

The instructors will introduce themselves and the course objectives
Participants will participate in a quick icebreaker activity to get to know each other
9.30 AM – 11.00 AM: Nature Awareness and Observation

Participants will take a guided nature walk and learn about local flora and fauna
They will practice observation and awareness skills, such as bird watching and tracking
11.00 AM – 12.00 PM: Survival Skills and Shelter Building

Participants will learn basic survival skills, such as fire starting and water purification
They will work in teams to build a simple shelter using natural materials
12.00 PM – 1.00 PM: Lunch and Reflective Discussion

Participants will have lunch and discuss their experiences so far
They will reflect on what they have learned and how they can apply it in their daily lives
Note: This is just an example program and can be modified based on the specific goals and objectives of the course.
